Italicise the title of a book, brochure or report. For example:

Reference a chapter of a book?

Chapter in an authored book, five authors, all chapters by same author(s): 

Bartol, K., Tein, M., Matthews, G., Sharma, B, & Scott-Ladd, B. (2011). Managing organizations through change and conflict. In Management: A Pacific rim focus (5th ed., pp. 229-262). Boston, MA: McGraw-Hill Irwin. 

Chapter in an edited book, three authors of chapter, two editors of book:

Mackey, J. E., Nicholas, M., & Maxwell, L. (2011). Student learning in a faculty-student practice clinic. In M. J. Bradshaw & A. J. Lowenstein (Eds.), Innovative teaching strategies in nursing and related health professions (5th ed., pp.459–474). Sudbury, MA: Jones and Bartlett.  

What to look for?

Example of a reference:

Author, Initial. (Year). Title of the book (number of edition). City of publication, Country/State: Publisher. 

Number of edition:

  • 1st edition - You do not need to include (1st ed.).
  • Revised edition - (Rev. ed.). 

Place of publication:

  • For books that are published outside the United States - City of publication, Country (e.g. Auckland, New Zealand) 
  • For books that are published in the United States - City of publication, Abbreviation (e.g. Boston, MA)
