Why find out about copyright?

It is important to know what you can legally copy or re-use. MIT students and staff must comply with the Copyright Act.

MIT 's license with Copyright Licensing New Zealand, extends the Copyright Act limits for copying. These include:
•  up to 10% or one chapter of a book, whichever is greater (you cannot copy a whole book)
•  one or part of one article from a periodical publication, or additional articles from the same periodical publication if they are on the same subject.

On the internet:

Did you know? - everything on the internet has copyright, including images.

Using a Youtube video?  - check the permissions or licenses.

Want to avoid copyright issues?

  • Get permission from the owner of the information e.g. for company or organisation logos
  • Search for re-usable images and information
  • Download books, videos, newspaper and journal articles from our library databases
